I needed to open a port on my Virtual Dedicated Server, which is hosted by godaddy. Since I don't have a software firewall installed there I decided to call Technical Support to see how I could do this. I really try to avoid calling their Customer Support and here is why.
From the moment I said I had a Virtual Dedicated Server, the "technical" rep, if you can call him technical, put on his mind that I shouldn't get any support because they don't provide support for Virtual Dedicated Customers. It was all on me. I told him I had no problem with opening a port on a firewall, but I didn't know the ip address of the firewall.
"Technical" Rep: I'm sorry sir, I can't help you. You're on your own, you have to do this by yourself.
Me: Listen, all I need is the IP address of the firewall.
I was thinking to myself, if they give me the ip address of the firewall then they are the stupidest people on earth or they have some sort of virtual firewall where each client has their own firewall.
"Technical" Rep: I'm sorry sir, I can't help you.
Oh god, was I getting mad!
Me: Listen, don't be a robot, you keep repeating the same phrase over and over again. Shut up and listen. I know how to open a fucking port, all I need is the IP address of the firewall so I can open the port. I will do it myself!
"Technical" Rep: Oh OK. Let me put you on hold so I can find out the IP Address.
[10 minutes go by]
"Technical" Rep: Sorry sir, I can't give you the IP Address of the firewall.
Me: (Thinking to myself) no shit Sherlock! (Out loud) Ok, then you open the port.
"Technical" Rep: We do not provide support for Virtual Dedicated customers.
Me: Not again! I understand you don't provide support for Virtual Dedicated customers, but this is beyond me. I don't have access to the firewall and you need to open a port for me, it's as easy as that. I would do it, but you don't want to give me the fucking address.
"Technical" Rep: Ok, please hold, I need to escalate this.
[15 minutes go by]
"Technical" Rep: Ok, sir, your port is opened.
